Blocking the sun to lower your cooling bill

A great tip that is sometimes forgotten among the hustle and bustle of the day is to shut the curtains on the side of your home that is being shined on by the sun. For our home, the sunniest portion at the hottest part of the day is right in our kitchen, of course. At mealtime, it’s almost unbearable if we haven’t remembered to pull the vertical blinds for our sliding glass door – it definitely feels like the “greenhouse effect”. During the cool hours of the morning, however, we leave it open and let some fresh air in while it is still cool. We love the fresh air and try to “get away with” keeping the air off for as long as possible. Sometimes just remembering to open and close windows as needed during the day keeps things cool and our energy bill lower
